The Challenge
How to Celebrate Heritage in Astoria's Main Public Space
First Forty Feet was tasked with designing Heritage Square in Astoria, Oregon, to transform an underutilized space into a functional and inviting public plaza. A key challenge was how to celebrate the city’s rich history without focusing on just one group of people, ensuring the design reflects the diverse influences and events that have shaped Astoria over time. The project also had to balance historical character with contemporary community needs, creating a space that supports events, gatherings, and daily activities. Additionally, the design needed to integrate stormwater management, improve accessibility, and enhance pedestrian connectivity. Navigating community input and stakeholder priorities was essential to ensuring the final design is inclusive, responsive, and reflective of the city's identity.

Heritage Square will become the new heart of Astoria, celebrating the heritage of the City. While specific cultures, events and people in other public spaces have been honored, the goal for Heritage Square could be to celebrate the resilience of the City in rebuilding after two devastating fires in the past.

The Preferred Design

The preferred alternative incorporates the most cherished elements from the three alternatives; a flexible hardscaped space for gathering and performances, glass tiles, decorative lighting, and structural elements that celebrate the town's resilience to rebuild, a large garden to help combat climate change, a large covered structure, and an extension of the city's historic timeline.
The Impact
A New Heart in Astoria
The Heritage Square project will transform an underutilized space into a vibrant community hub, enhancing social, economic, and cultural life in downtown Astoria. Thoughtfully designed paving and canopy lighting will create an inviting atmosphere, making the square a striking visual and experiential attraction in the city. By improving walkability, integrating historical elements, and supporting local businesses, the redesign will attract visitors and strengthen Astoria’s identity. Sustainability and accessibility are key priorities, ensuring a resilient and inclusive space for all. Ultimately, Heritage Square will become a dynamic destination that fosters connection and revitalizes the heart of Astoria.
