The Challenge

Improving The Most Challenged Neighborhoods of the City

The design of the festival street in Old Town, Portland, Oregon, presented a significant challenge, particularly within the historic and culturally rich context of Chinatown. The project aimed to create a vibrant, adaptable space that could host community events, markets, and gatherings, enhancing the livability of one of the city’s most difficult areas. First Forty Feet needed to balance the desire for a dynamic and engaging public space with the requirements of accessibility, safety, and respect for the neighborhood’s heritage. One of the major challenges was addressing the neglected state of tree wells throughout the area. To improve the overall aesthetic and functionality of the street, the team explored innovative solutions, such as adding tree grates, to ensure these spaces were clean, safe, and integrated into the broader design. This project emphasized the need for thoughtful urban design to breathe new life into Old Town, supporting its transformation into a destination while honoring its cultural roots.

The Impact

The design and implementation of the festival street in Old Town, within the historic context of Chinatown, have had a transformative impact on the neighborhood. By creating a flexible, pedestrian-friendly space that can host events, markets, and community gatherings, the project has brought new energy and activity to an area that has long faced economic and social challenges. The revitalized street has become a hub for cultural expression, encouraging foot traffic and local business patronage, and fostering a sense of community pride. Additionally, the improvements to the tree wells, including the installation of porous paving, have significantly enhanced the street's aesthetic and safety, creating a cleaner and more inviting environment. These changes have not only improved the daily experience of residents and visitors but have also demonstrated how thoughtful urban design can uplift and rejuvenate historic neighborhoods, making Old Town a more vibrant, accessible, and welcoming part of Portland.

Porous paving was the best solution over tree grates since it could be adapted to any tree well configuration while ensuring the health of the tree.
