The Challenge

Creating a Cohesive Downtown

Downtown Soldotna, Alaska, has a history deeply rooted in the development of the Kenai Peninsula. Established in the mid-20th century during the post-World War II era, Soldotna began as a small settlement along the Sterling Highway, which was constructed to connect the region to Anchorage. The town quickly became a hub for homesteaders and those involved in the growing fishing industry, particularly with the development of the Kenai River's world-renowned salmon fishery.

Over the decades, downtown Soldotna evolved from a modest collection of businesses catering to locals and travelers into a vibrant community center. However, this collection of businesses has long lacked the cohesion needed to create a true downtown destination. Recognizing this, the city is now focused on developing a walkable downtown area that includes community gathering spaces and natural connections to the Kenai River. The goal is to transform downtown Soldotna into a cohesive, inviting space that blends the town's small-town charm and historical roots with a modern, vibrant atmosphere, making it a central hub for both residents and visitors.

Today

Soldotna's riverfront boardwalk attracts people from around the region who enjoy salmon fishing. Protecting this amenity, while preserving the natural qualities of the riverfront became a central part of the vision.

What we heard...

Residents of Soldotna felt strongly that a walkable and vibrant downtown was vital to the city's long-term success. People wanted new an improved gathering spaces to improve the social well-being and cohesion among residents. They also voiced their concerns about how new development would impact the health of the waterfront, with more people and cars populating the land.

The Vision

A New Downtown Where New Gathering Spaces Coexist, Expand, And Enhance the Natural Habitats Near The Kenai River

The vision for Soldotna's development, rooted in its history and commitment to preserving natural environments, is set to significantly enhance the quality of life for residents. By transforming spaces like Soldotna Creek Park into vibrant community areas with green spaces, river boardwalks, and recreational facilities, the city fosters a sense of community and connection with nature. The riverfront redevelopment plan, which blends downtown development with the preservation of natural habitats, promises to create a balanced environment where residents can enjoy both urban amenities and the beauty of the natural landscape. This approach not only supports the health of local ecosystems but also enriches the daily lives of the people of Soldotna by providing more opportunities for recreation, gathering, and community engagement.

Waterfront Gathering Spaces

New waterfront public spaces facing the Kenai River will become important places for social gathering and allow people to connect to nature and recreational activities.

Downtown Trail

A completed trail loop will connect the two ends of Downtown Soldotna and link the various new public parks, plazas, and community gathering spots. The trail will weave urban and natural spaces together and frequently provide access to the waterfront.
